Hi Chris,

Very interesting story and yet another meaning! We might never know with certainty what spiff stands for, but I certainly like your story.

I was told many years ago by a gentleman in his 70's that SPIFF stood for SPecial Incentive For the Floor. The story was that back in the very early days of the large department stores (Macy's was given specifically) that the perfume manufacturers would provide an incentive to saleswomen in women's perfume department to push their products for a given period of time (sometimes the products were new, or sometimes they needed a boost, so the manufacturers rep would show up to present the "SPIFF".) For example, if Sally would sell 10 bottles of XYZ perfume in a given period of time, the manufacturer of XYZ perfume would give her a free gift basket or perhaps cash as a reward for pushing their product specifically. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but in the sales world today, SPIFF is widely-used in the same context. Chris -Omaha, Nebraska

Hey Julien,

Being around incentive comp projects for the last several years, I've heard the term "spiff" and I always new it had something to do with incentives, but I never knew the definition until today!

Thanks for research into the origin of the word.
